                        TYPES OF ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES IN INDIAN RAILWAYS


(Only Passenger train locomotives) Indian Railways uses 25 kV AC supply in its Electrified route, with in total 27,999 Km of Route is electrified, which by the way accounts for 42.42 %. The Main Locomotives being used are:

--WAP Series Locomotives:
    1. WAP-1 :- A Very Successful Class Locomotive Designed by CLW( Chittaranjan Locomotive Works ) in 1980 for the Kolkata-Delhi Rajdhani Express, the locomotive is rated 3,900 hp (2,900 kW) maximum, 3,760 hp (2,800 kW) continuous and has a maximum speed of 130 km/h (81 mph).

   2. WAP-2* :- This Locomotive decommissioned in the late 1980s, it is simillar to the WAM-2 and 3 type Locomotive with Flexicoil Mark-II bogies,Rated Power is 2,910hp.Only 4 Units Built.

  3. WAP-3* :- It is Simillar to WAP-1 Type Locomotive,Only 5 Units Built since 1987,Maximum Speed is 140 km/h (87 mph).

  4. WAP-4 :- This Locomotive Is Upgraded Version OF WAP-1,.As WAP-1 was found inadequate to haul the longer, heavier express trains (24-26 coaches).It was introduced in 1994, with a similar bodyshell to the WAP-1 class, but with Hitachi traction motors.Maximum rated power of this loco is 5,350 hp (3,990 kW),and speed limit is 150 km/h (93 mph).

  5. WAP-5 :- This is the Highspeed Electric Locomotive produced and used in indian railways.The first 10 locomotives were imported from ABB (Switzerland Based Company)in 1995.it is built by CLW since 2000.Max power is 6000hp with Bo-Bo bogies and a speed limit of 160 km/h (99 mph)  Premier express train hauled by WAP-5 locomotives,The Gatimaan Express and Bhopal Shatabdi trains hauled by WAP-5 locomotives travel at 160 km/h (99 mph) and 150 km/h (93 mph) respectively in the New Delhi - Agra Cantt section.

         Nickname of this loco are Vijay Utkarsh, Nav Jagran, Nav Kirti, Gaurav and Navodit.
WAP-5 With HOG is curently Under devlopment by CLW(Chittaranjan Locomotive Works).
WAP-5 locomotives homed at Ghaziabad loco shed have large 'P-5' decals on their body sides Common livery is white, with 2 red stripes,Vadodara Shed and Amul Milk made a contract of advertising 20 locomotives of Shed. Thus the Amul livery came into existence.
Total 138 units built as of July 2018.

   6. WAP-6* :- Locomotive Designed by CLW(Chittaranjan Locomotive Works)in 1997.This locomotive is varient of WAP-4 class locomotive.the WAP-4 design where Co-Co Flexicoil Mark 1 cast bogies of the usual WAP4 was replaced by Fabricated Flexicoil Mark IV bogies Rest all other specification are same as wap4.This class was an unsuccessful one. All have been converted back as WAP-4. All were homed at Asansol(ASN) shed but after conversion reallocated to Howrah (HWH)shed.
    it has 5,000 hp (3,700 kW),total 17 units built.

  7. WAP-7 :- It is the most powerful passenger locomotive in Indian Railways also Known as KING OF ACCELERATION.it is three-phase AC electric locomotive developed by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works.It is a passenger variant of the freight locomotive WAG 9 with a modified gear ratio to pull lighter loads at higher speeds. It is capable of hauling 24 coach trains at speeds ranging between 110–140 km/h (68–87 mph), depending on the MPS (Maximum Permissible Speed).

                This loco is menufactured by CLW(Chittaranjan Locomotive Works) & DLW(Diesel Locomotive Works) feature of this locomotive is that it eliminates the need to have separate End on Generation (EOG) sets for air-conditioning in long-distance trains resulting in significant savings on maintenance and running costs. This technology, called HOG or "Head On Generation", transfers electric power from the loco's pantograph to the coaches instead of EOG where a power car equipped with diesel generator capable of generating adequate power of 3-phase 50 Hz 415 V / 750 V AC (called 'hotel load') is provided at either end of the train rake to supply power.
                  475 Units built as of June 2018.Maximum rated power is 6120 HP continuous,Maximum speed is 140 km/h.

--WCAM Series Locomotives:

WCAM is the dual-power AC/DC series locomotive used by Indian Railways. These locomotives can run under both DC traction and AC traction. All the WCAM locos except the WCAM 1 (made by CLW) were made by BHEL. They have 750 V DC traction motors, using resistance banks in DC mode and a variable ratio auto-transformer with rectifier units in AC mode, for power control.
 The dual-voltage WCAM series locomotives haul intercity trains out of Mumbai DC suburban region on Central Railways which was on a 1500V DC overhead system, as opposed to other parts of India which had 25000 V AC overhead.

WCAM-1 :-  Designed by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, total 53 were built between 1975 and 1979. Decommissioned by Western Railway, it is the only locomotive with reverse pantographs.
           These locos can be seen in Mumbai-Vadodara-Ahmedabad section but occasionally they travel up to Pune but not beyond these because the maintenance facilities are not available beyond this point. An occasional loco has also appeared on Mumbai C.S.T.-Igatpuri route. This locos works on both AC as well as DC as their classification suggests.

WCAM-2/P :- Designed by BHEL, 20 were built in 1995–96.were rated 2900 hp in DC mode and 4700 hp in AC mode (max. speed 120 km/h in AC mode & 105 km/h in DC mode)

WCAM-3 :- The WCAM 3 class locomotives specifically designed for use by Central Railways in the Ghat section towards Pune.Fifty were designed by Bharat Heavy Electricals, rated at 4,600 hp (3,400 kW) on DC traction and 5,000 hp (3,700 kW) on AC. Owned by Central Railway, they are the most widely-used locomotive on the Mumbai-Pune section.
